The Rising Need for In law-Suite!

Over the past few years, we’ve seen an increase in adults taking in their parents or adults wanting to stay longer in their current homes instead of downsizing once they become empty nesters. Due to the wants and needs of adults staying in their homes longer, taking in parents, adults moving in with their parents, we’ve seen an increase in demand for room additions and room conversions. Homeowners want to make sure their current home can comfortably meet the needs of aging in place. Being able to be closer to family and having the opportunity to provide for them also gives homeowners a great sense of peace of mind. 

If you need ideas on how to add a second primary suite or in-law suite, here are three ways to create an in-law suite for your home.

Room Addition: If you have a downstairs bathroom, you can build an addition off that bathroom to create a spacious primary suite. In the addition, you can expand your current bathroom to accommodate a double vanity, large walk-in shower, or a soaker tub. You also have the option of building a complete addition with a new bathroom and bedroom space. 

Casita: Suppose you have additional space in your backyard. In that case, you can also consider building a casita with a bedroom, bathroom, small living area, and a kitchenette. This is an ideal solution if you’re looking to give yourself and your family members their own sense of privacy and independence. 

Conversion: Converting an existing room in your home is one of the easiest ways to create an in-law suite. You can create a second primary suite by converting a hall bath and making it part of an existing bedroom. You can also convert your garage or upstairs loft space into the bedroom space you need to help accommodate your family.
