They Loved the Lake House… But Hated the Way It Functioned

After years of working hard and raising a family, this retired couple was ready to slow down and fully enjoy life at the lake. The views were beautiful, the location was perfect, and they loved the idea of spending this next chapter hosting family, relaxing outdoors, and enjoying a slower pace of life.

But the home itself wasn’t supporting the way they wanted to live.

The layout felt disconnected and difficult to navigate. The biggest issue was a spiral staircase placed directly in the middle of the home. While visually interesting years ago, it had become impractical for everyday life and was far from ADA friendly. Moving through the space felt awkward, tight, and limiting.

They knew if this was going to be their long-term home, something needed to change.

Relocating the Staircase Changed Everything

At first glance, the project looked like a standard remodel. Update the kitchen, refresh the finishes, extend the patio.

But as we walked through the home and listened to how they wanted to live, it became clear the real issue was the flow of the home itself.

The staircase was relocated to a more intentional area of the home, instantly opening up the main living spaces and allowing the layout to finally feel connected. What once felt cramped and interrupted could now breathe naturally from room to room.

This was not about making the home bigger. It was about making it easier to live in comfortably for years to come.

A Kitchen Designed Around Gathering

The kitchen became a major focus of the remodel because it plays such an important role in how they spend time together with family and guests.

The previous kitchen felt closed off and outdated, limiting both function and interaction. The new layout was designed to feel open, welcoming, and highly functional while still maintaining a timeless lake home feel.

More workspace, better circulation, improved storage, and intentional sightlines completely transformed how the kitchen functions day to day. Now, whether they are cooking dinner together or hosting family for the weekend, the space supports it effortlessly.

Expanding the Patio to Embrace Lake Living

One of the most important goals for the homeowners was creating a stronger connection to the outdoors.

The original patio felt undersized and disconnected from the home, especially for a property centered around lake living. By extending the patio, we were able to create a true outdoor living space designed for gathering, relaxing, and taking in the views.

It became an extension of the home itself. A place where mornings can start quietly with coffee overlooking the water and evenings can end surrounded by family and friends.

Designing for Long-Term Comfort

One of the biggest priorities throughout the remodel was making sure the home would continue supporting them long-term.

Removing barriers, improving circulation, and creating a more accessible layout allowed the home to better fit this stage of life while still feeling elevated and timeless. Every decision balanced beauty with practicality so the home would not only look updated, but truly function better for retirement living.

A Transformation That Changed the Way They Live

By the end of the remodel, the transformation was about far more than updated finishes or added square footage.

The home now feels calm, open, functional, and easy to move through. Spaces connect naturally. The lake views are embraced instead of blocked. And most importantly, the home now supports the lifestyle they had always imagined for retirement.

Because the best remodels are not just about changing a home. They are about creating a space that supports the way you want to live.
