They Almost Added On… Until We Realized This Was the Real Problem in Their Alamo Heights Home
A Home in the Right Place, But Not the Right Layout
When these homeowners first came to KM BUILDERS, they loved where they lived. The location, the neighborhood, and being close to the Alamo Heights schools made this home the right place for their family.
But the home itself wasn’t working.
The layout felt tight and disconnected. The spaces they used every day—especially the kitchen, living, and dining areas—didn’t support how they wanted to live as a family. The original plan was to expand, adding new square footage to create more room.
But as we walked through the design process together, something became clear. Adding more space wouldn’t solve the real problem.
The Pivot That Changed the Direction of the Project
Instead of moving forward with an addition, we shifted the focus entirely.
The heart of the home still wouldn’t function the way they needed it to, so we reimagined the entire downstairs. Walls were removed, the home was opened from front to back, and the layout was redesigned to feel connected, open, and intentional.
This wasn’t about making the home bigger. It was about making it work better.
Designing a Kitchen Around the Way They Live
For this family, the kitchen is where everything happens.
Cooking, gathering, helping with homework, hosting friends. It needed to be more than just beautiful. It needed to function effortlessly.
The husband is the one who cooks, and at six foot six, that played a major role in how we designed the space. Walkways, clearances, and overall layout were carefully considered to give him the room he needed to move comfortably and enjoy cooking.
Two large islands create space to prep, serve, and gather all at once, allowing the kitchen to truly function as the center of the home.
Designing in Real Time for the Right Fit
Even the range wall was mocked up on site so the client could stand in place, move naturally, and make sure every detail felt right.
From the height to the depth, every element was adjusted in real time. It’s a level of detail that ensures the space doesn’t just look good, but works exactly the way it should.
A Statement That Anchors the Home
The range wall ultimately became the focal point of the entire home.
From the moment you walk in, it draws your attention. Every curve, proportion, and finish was thoughtfully designed and built on site, creating a feature that feels both custom and timeless.
Function Hidden Within the Design
Behind the scenes, storage was just as intentional.
A full wall of cabinetry was designed to feel like a furniture piece rather than traditional storage. Integrated appliances, layered cabinetry, and a hidden door leading to a guest suite keep the space clean, seamless, and highly functional.
It’s a balance of beauty and practicality that allows the design to feel effortless.
Managing the Realities of Remodeling an Older Home
Projects like this come with challenges, especially in an older Alamo Heights home and with the family living in the home during construction.
With walls removed and ceilings opened up to the attic, we had to manage heat, airflow, and dust while maintaining comfort and privacy. Full partition systems were built to separate the construction zone, allowing the homeowners to continue living in their home throughout the process.
It’s the kind of work you don’t see, but it’s what makes the experience possible.
Creating a Home That Feels Natural to Live In
Beyond the kitchen, the goal was to make the entire home feel more intentional.
We repurposed underutilized areas, relocated key spaces, and made decisions that allow the home to feel natural to move through. Even temporary solutions, like relocating the laundry into the primary closet, were designed to support their daily life both during and after construction.
A Primary Suite That Feels Like a Retreat
In the primary bathroom, we simplified and elevated the space.
Removing heavy, outdated materials and replacing them with lighter finishes brought in natural light and created a space that feels calm, open, and easy to maintain.
A Transformation You Can Feel
When everything came together, the transformation wasn’t just visual.
It changed how the home feels to live in. A space where they can cook without feeling confined, gather without feeling disconnected, and finally enjoy a home that supports their everyday life.
In the end, this project wasn’t about adding more square footage. It was about rethinking the space they already had and designing it to work exactly the way it should.
