Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Design

The beloved modern farmhouse design now has a sophisticated modern upgrade.

When the farmhouse kitchen design style first became popular, the distinguishing features included a large farmhouse sink, shiplap everywhere, subway tile backsplash, open shelves, and thick clunky hardware. Accompanying these distinct features were galvanized home decor items and dinnerware proudly displayed on the open shelves creating this lived in yet warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was the equivalent of a modern version of the kitchen you may have loved or had fond memories of as a child.

While the charm of the farmhouse kitchen was undeniably appealing, it was beginning to feel dated and unorganized. Now with today’s modern designs, the popular farmhouse kitchen design is trending again with new upgrades. Here’s what you can expect to see in a modern farmhouse kitchen.

There are two popular cabinet color palettes: soft, muted earth tones or bold and moody tones. For the soft muted earth tones, you'll see various shades of greens, light grays, whites, and natural wood stained cabinets. For the bold and mood tones, you’ll see various shades of charcoal grays, blacks and blues. One popular option is to create a two-tone cabinet design that balances both the soft and moody tones. The countertops will be a sleek quartz material that’s durable and easy to maintain. The vent hood will have a stunning stucco design or will act as a statement piece featuring an oversized metal vent hood.

You’ll find natural stained floating shelves on the walls accented by small, chic pendant lights. You’ll find sleek gold or matte black hardware on all the cabinetry instead of the chunky style handles in a traditional farmhouse kitchen. The pendant lighting will be sleek and modern with a glass orb design or a vintage metal design. You’ll also find glass front cabinetry storage where you can display your cookbooks, dinnerware or add decorations.

You’ll still see shiplap in today's modern farmhouse kitchen, but not as the main wall treatment. Instead, you’ll find shiplap being used as an accent on the ceiling or on the island. Faux wood beams not only continue to be a staple piece in farmhouse kitchen designs but they’ve also climbed higher on the must-have list as they bring an element of rugged elegance. To elevate the look of today’s modern farmhouse design, designers are also including appliances panels to bring sophistication to the farmhouse kitchen design.

The new modern farmhouse kitchen design has the right amount of charm with the right amount of modern style that can be the perfect look for your home. With an open floor plan, the modern farmhouse kitchen will flow beautifully with the rest of your home to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
