Castroville Kitchen Transformation Story

Nothing makes a home more special than having a special connection to your family history.

When our clients finished building their custom home, they thought it was going to be their forever home. They loved the location and the design of the home and they thought for sure their family was going to grow old in their custom home. However, after living in their home for a few years, they soon found themselves putting their home on the market to purchase their beautiful Hill Country home in Castroville. One of the main features that attracted our clients to the home was that there was a unique family tie to our client’s family history. There was a room off the kitchen that used to be a barn that belonged to our client's grandfather, who used to be the local butcher for the city of Castroville! Once our clients found out that the home was connected to their family history, they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase the home.

There were many things to love about this beautiful Castroville home. It had a grand fireplace that stood between the living room and the dining room. It had vaulted ceilings in the living room that were accented by wood beams. It was as if the home had just the right amount of Hill Country charm in every room, except the kitchen. The kitchen was average in size but lacked storage space, lacked prep space, had insufficient lighting, and quickly became crowded whenever more than two people tried to gather in the kitchen. Being that our clients enjoyed having friends and family over and frequently hosted gatherings in their home, they knew they needed help to upgrade their kitchen.

Our team wanted to give our clients a complete custom kitchen design that would be beneficial to their home and improve their lifestyle. During the demolition, we gutted everything from the existing kitchen. We also relocated the laundry room to make room for the large, walk-in pantry and bumped a wall of cabinetry back a few feet to ensure the kitchen would be spacious enough to fit a grand kitchen island.

As part of our client’s custom kitchen design, we made sure to provide them with plenty of storage space by almost doubling their kitchen cabinetry. Towards the back of the kitchen, there was a bay window that had built-in seating that was used as a breakfast nook dining area. We ripped out the old benches and replaced that area with cabinetry for some much-needed storage space. We also added floor-to-ceiling cabinetry on the adjacent wall for even more storage space in addition to the all-new kitchen cabinetry throughout the expanded kitchen space.

In addition to hosting gatherings in their home, our clients also enjoyed cooking, so we gave them everything they needed to have a chef-inspired kitchen. The vent hood was custom built by our in-house cabinetry maker, which had a three-tone wood design to complement the cabinetry design of the kitchen. The stove is a chef’s dream come true with an industrial design, eight burners, and a double oven. The fridge has a beautiful double door opening with a deep freezer drawer down below. The dishwasher is a modern and sleek design from Miele high-end appliances. All three appliances had a stunning black stainless steel finish with beautiful gold brass door handles and knobs. The classic black and gold details gave the kitchen a timeless vintage design.

To complement the black design of the appliances, we installed an oversized island with black cabinetry. To contrast against the black cabinetry, we installed a gorgeous, white Caesarstone countertop with a marble-inspired design. The island had a lower tier that was used for an eat-in dining area. The other part of the island had a small prep sink with plenty of additional prep space that made preparing large family meals extremely convenient.

While every detail in the island and the appliances were simply stunning, the beauty of this kitchen design didn’t stop there. We installed a large farmhouse sink directly below a window that had a beautiful view of the backyard. As our client washes dishes, they can gaze out to their luscious yard space which makes doing the dishes a relaxing way to clean up the kitchen. For the finishing design touches, we installed classic white subway tile, new hardwood flooring, black and gold cabinet hardware, and floating shelves where our clients could display their kitchen accessories.

As our team was preparing the design plans for the kitchen, it was important to the client to have designated spaces to put some of their belongings on display in their kitchen. So we installed a beautiful glass front cabinet next to the refrigerator where our client was able to display their fine china collection from their wedding! Another prized possession they were able to display was a framed picture of their grandfather’s old butcher shop. Another item they wanted to display was this antique recipe book that was passed down from the client’s grandmother.

In this kitchen remodel, there were many beautiful design details that were accented with personal touches that made this kitchen feel more like home. With the remodeled upgrades and personal touches, their new Castroville home is now the home where the client’s family will grow old together.
