How to Design an Open Concept Floor Plan

There’s no better challenge than trying to make wide open spaces feel cozy.

As much as we crave modern design, sometimes we have a hard time letting go of previous traditional design patterns. For so long, we’ve become accustomed to having separation from our living rooms, dining rooms, and other interior spaces. However, as much as we say we want an open concept floor plan, there’s still some hesitation to move forward with an open concept design because we fear it may not feel cozy or inviting.

While this hesitation is completely normal, there are a few tricks you include in your home design to help your open-concept floor plan feel both open and welcoming. You can use rugs and lamps to help define zones within your open-concept floor plan. The way you place your furniture will also help to create zones. For example, you can have the back of your sofa facing your dining kitchen space to create a break between the two spaces.

In addition to creating zones with your furniture, you can also carve out small nook spaces using your furniture. For example, you can set up a reading nook or a desk area in the tight corners of your open floor plan. This will give every area of your floor plan a unique purpose and provide you with comfort you’re used to feeling in a traditional, closed floor plan design.

If you’re still not fully comfortable with a full open-concept floor plan, you can use arches or enlarged cased openings to provide some separation. Using large cased openings is a great way to compromise on separation of space while  providing clean sight lines for an open concept design. Another great option is to use faux wood beams which will also add character to help warm up your open-concept design.
