Alamo Heights Kitchen Transformation Story

Everyone in San Antonio loves the homes in Alamo Heights neighborhood.

The Alamo Heights neighborhood offers a wide variety of beautiful homes from bungalow-style homes and craftsman style homes to garden cottage homes and mid-century modern homes. Each home has unique characteristics that you don’t see much of in today’s modern architecture such as large front porches, dormer windows, and old brick-paved walkways.

The charm of the Alamo Heights neighborhood is what attracted our clients to their mid-century modern home. They fell in love with the midcentury modern architecture of the home. They loved all the original brick that was used for the exterior of the home. They loved the original hardwood floors on the interior home. There were multiple things they loved about the home, except for the kitchen.

The home had many beautiful characteristics, but the kitchen was not one of them! For starters, the kitchen was closed off and separated from the living and dining areas by two brick walls. There were three openings, one off the front entrance to the kitchen, one from the kitchen to the dining area, and one in between the two brick walls from the dining area to the living room. To walk from the kitchen to the dining room and then to the living room was like walking through a small maze. If you wanted to talk with someone in the dining room while you were in the kitchen, there was a small window opening above the sink area in the kitchen that looked out to the dining area.

The kitchen itself also had an odd layout. Two walls made an L-shaped kitchen where most of the cabinets and countertops were placed. On the opposite wall away from the main L-shape, there was an island peninsula that connected to the wall where the stovetop was placed. Since the stovetop was oddly placed, it had a vent hood with an odd angle to match the unusual placement of the stovetop. Since there were only two walls with cabinet storage, our clients had to resort to bar carts for smaller items such as a toaster, microwave, and other pantry items due to the lack of storage and countertop space. With the extra bar carts taking up additional space in the already small kitchen, the kitchen felt twice as small.

Not only did the kitchen have an odd layout, but it was also very dated. The countertop material was old 4x4 tile. Wood paneling was used for the dining room and continued into the kitchen. The walls that didn’t have wood paneling in the kitchen had peeling paint. The dated kitchen features, lack of storage, and lack of prep space made this kitchen feel undesirable.

Our clients love to cook large family meals and host large gatherings in their home, so after years of making do with what they had, it was time for a remodel. The first thing our team took care of was removing the kitchen walls and brick walls to open up the home to create an open concept design. We replaced the old cabinets and added more cabinets for increased storage space with brand new maple cabinets with a white finish. To ensure our client had enough storage space, we also installed floor to ceiling cabinetry that could be used for pantry storage or storage for smaller appliances. We added a large kitchen island with hardwood cabinetry with a dark grey finish to contrast against the white kitchen cabinets.

The island was placed very strategically in the new kitchen design. Instead of the island being centered in the middle of the new kitchen cabinet placement, it was installed to be centered halfway in the kitchen and halfway into the dining area. The clients worked with our Design Consultants to come up with this unique solution so there could be plenty of space for guests to gather while entertaining and space to prep the food for cooking. For the finishing touches, we installed quartz countertops and a gloss smoke-colored backsplash to the kitchen design together.

Our clients were extremely happy with the design of their new kitchen, but there was one thing they loved the most about their new kitchen. Since our clients enjoyed cooking as much as they loved to entertain, they were most excited about their new appliances. We ordered all new Viking appliances which included the fridge, gas top range and oven, vent hood, microwave drawer, dishwasher, and wine fridge. This high-end appliance package allowed our client to have the chef-inspired kitchen they’ve always dreamt of. Now that they have the prep space they needed and they have the appliances to cook restaurant-style meals, our clients can cook and entertain their friends and family with ease.

Our Alamo Heights client was just like any other homeowner when they were looking for the right place to call home. They found a home in their ideal neighborhood, in their ideal location, and with ideal schools nearby. Their home checked off all the boxes except for one, but they knew it was something that could be fixed with the right remodeler. Now that their kitchen is beautifully remodeled, everything about their home is now perfect.
