The Multifunctional Island

It's time to kiss your dysfunctional kitchen goodbye!

With your kitchen being such a heavily used space, you want it to flow and function properly. You want your kitchen layout to flow nicely so you can move and prep easily. You also want your kitchen to have a good traffic flow so no one bumps into you or invades your space as you cook. Adding a multifunctional island can bring enjoyment back into your kitchen space if your kitchen isn't offering a productive flow or functionality.

Designing a multifunctional island doesn't necessarily mean creating a space that can act as both a prep space and a workspace for homework or office work. A multifunctional island can look like having all of your small kitchen appliances designed into your island. This would include your microwave, dishwasher, sink, and maybe a small wine fridge in your kitchen island. By confining all your small appliances in one area, you create the opportunity for more cabinetry storage along the main walls of your kitchen.

Another design option to create a multifunctional island is to include your stove rather than your sink. We know this may seem a bit taboo, but it can drastically change the flow and function of your kitchen for the better. You don't have to worry about having your back facing your guests or your family while you're cooking, which also helps to improve the traffic flow of your kitchen. Next to your stove, you can add pull-out spice racks and utensil drawers to keep all your cooking essentials within arm's reach. Suppose you decide to go with this island design. In that case, you also have the opportunity to add luxury appliances such as a full-sized wine fridge or a large, double-door fridge and freezer for a gorgeous, high-end kitchen design. Or you can include beautiful appliance garage cabinets to neatly tuck away any small appliances like your coffee maker, blender, toaster, etc.

Each island design has its different advantages; however, they do have one benefit in common, and that's extra seating. Including additional seating can help alleviate potential traffic jams in your kitchen by keeping family and guests out of your cooking space. In addition to creating this separation from your cooking space, it also helps to form an entertaining zone closer to your living or dining room. This gives you an ideal space to set out platters or drinks while hosting family and friends.

There are many ways an island can benefit your kitchen design. We would love to help you take back your kitchen by designing a gorgeous island to enjoy with family and friends. Call our office at 210-680-5626 to schedule a consultation today!
