Any homeowner who is also a pet owner knows that pets are more than just animals, they’re family. And just like any other beloved family member, they deserve to be included in the remodeling process too.

When planning and designing your new remodel, there can be multiple factors to take into consideration. You may take into consideration some design elements your kids may want, what your spouse wants, and what your elderly family members want or need if they’re living with you. But there’s one family member who doesn’t have a voice that may want to be apart of the remodeling design decisions too and that's your pet. Your sweet four-legged friend may not be able to tell you what they want or need but that doesn’t mean you can’t include them in your remodel.

Being pet lovers ourselves, we’ve come up with a short list of pet-friendly ideas for your next remodeling project.

Built-in food bowl station - When its feeding time, our pets can get a little messy. Food may spill on the floor which can lead to your pet's slobber ending up on the floor as they try to lick it up. Water may spill all over the floor in combination with the slobber which can make for a slippery yucky mess. In your remodeling design, there are some ways to help prevent feeding time messes but incorporating built-in feeding stations. One idea is to make a recessed corner in your kitchen island or at the end of your cabinets. A built-in feeding station will help to eliminate or control the messes made while your four-legged family member has their next meal. This is also helpful for large dogs who need an elevated eating station to put less strain on their necks. You could also incorporate a pull-out storage drawer near your pet feeding station to store their food.

Built-in bed - Now our pets may not live very difficult lives, but sometimes they can have hard days. The kids may be chasing them around the house or you may be trying to smother them with love and cuddles when they may not be in the mood to receive it. Again, they may not have hard lives but they still need a space of their own to retreat to. A solution for that is a built-in bed or crate area. This area could be under a staircase, incorporated under a built-in window bench, or it could be part of your custom cabinets. Even if you don’t have an area to create a built-in bed for your pooch, you can still give them a designated area by finding a pet bed that matches your furniture.

Mudroom wash station - While feeding time can get messy, every pet owner knows that bath time can get even messier. We want our furry friends to stay clean but not all pet owners are willing to pay to get their pets groomed. So we fight our animals in the bathtub or shower to try and have them cleaned. Yet it never fails, we end up splashed with water, water splashes all over the floor from your pet trying to escape, then when your pet does escape, they make a soapy sudsy mess all over the house. Well, if you’re planning on remodeling your laundry room or mudroom, consider adding a wash station. This will help to keep all soap, bubbles, and water in a confined area and will help you to stay dry too!
