The Beauty of Living in Historical Homes / by Keith Moehle

Whether you’re a history buff or an architect lover, there is a certain charm historical homes have that no one can deny. There’s just something so captivating about them that you can’t help but be mesmerized by them.

Living in a historic home is more than just owning a home, it’s part of living in a little piece of history! Now we know remodeling is already hard enough as it is and you can imagine trying to remodel a historic home. Just picture dust flying everywhere, funky smells, outdated plumbing and electrical, hidden hazards behind the walls, I mean the list can go on and on.

Although the trials you may experience while owning a historic home may be daunting, the benefits you gain are unrivaled. Historic homes are filled with incredible details that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Today’s home standards cannot compare to those of historical homes.

Architecturally speaking, historic homes are anything but cookie cutter. They have unique details that you can’t find in today’s modern construction. They have beautiful built-ins, ornate trimmings, and intricate architectural embellishments. It’s easy to lose yourself in the small nooks and crannies, the tall ceilings and windows, and of course the gorgeous original hardwood floors. Aside from the details, the quality of historical homes is another architectural bonus. These homes were built with strong foundations and good bones in order to last for generations.

In terms of price, historical homes might actually be more affordable than a new construction home. Unrenovated historical homes often cost lower than a newly built home. By purchasing a historic home, you could be eligible for certain tax breaks from the historic preservation tax program. You can also earn a higher return on investment when you remodel a historical home. Homes located in a historical area are generally worth more, appreciate faster and hold their value for a longer period of time.

If the price and the architecture doesn’t capture your attention, then the curb appeal will!  The curb appeal is the cherry on top to the irresistible charm of historic homes. If you were to purchase a newer construction home, you would have to wait years for the trees and shrubs to mature into well-manicured landscapes. However with historic homes, you have an instant highly refined landscape! You don’t have to worry about planting sod, shrubs, or trees. All you have to do is a little bit of trimming, maybe plant a few fresh flowers and you now have an elegant garden to match your charming home.
